DCG Academy Science×English Math×English

(Foreign Language Teacher: Katie&Rachel)

DCG Academy held two events in November. The students did online lessons about science and math before attending the events so that they could practice the vocabulary and ideas. Then, they attended the events at school to put their vocabulary and ideas to use with their classmates.

On November 21st, there was a paper plane science experiment attended by two students, three FLTs(Katie,Rachel,Jason)and a Japanese teacher. The students folded 3 paper airplanes of different models, and made guesses about which would fly the farthest and the fastest. They practiced making a lab report in English and talking about science ideas in English. The students even had a good idea to put all the planes together to make a “super plane”! They’ve also enjoyed flying their paper airplanes at home after the experiment. Their curiosity and excitement about science will help them in future studies.

On November 28th, we held a friendship graph math activity with seven students, three FLTs(Katie,Rachel,Jason)and two Japanese teachers. The students stood in a circle and shared facts about themselves in English, such as their hobbies or their favorite things. Anyone in the circle who shared the same fact raised their hand, and created a connection between them by passing yarn to each other. At the end, the students thought our connections looked like a spiderweb! The students learned about a special field of math called ‘graph theory’. They also learned that math can appear in unexpected places to help us model many things in the real world, such as human connections or railway lines.

We hope to have another event soon so that the students can enjoy science and math in English!
