On Sunday, June 9, ten Junior 3 students participated in the Ohtsuma Model United Nations held at Ohtsuma Women’s University in Hanzomon. With the current war in Ukriaine and the genocide being carried out in Gaza, this Model UN looked into a past failure of the real United Nations, which was failing to stop a genocide in Rwanda in 1994.

The goal of the conference was to see what could have been done to prevent the killing of more than 800,000 members of the Tutsi minority group by members of the Hutu majority which took place over 100 days.

To prepare for the conference, students participated in workshops led by our school’s History teacher, Mr. Watanabe.

At the end of the conference, one student said they were glad to learn about the atmosphere of a Model UN conference. Another stated that although they did research before this conference, they will need to do more research for the next one. Finally, everyone is looking forward to making a motion in the future.

Jason May)
