DCG Academy Octopus Games

This year’s DCG Academy has been so much fun! Our last event of the year was Octopus games. Our students raced against the clock, beating games and answering questions rapid-fire, in a free for all games festival.

This event’s questions were by far the hardest this year, as students were tested on OC class content from the whole year. Talk about a review lesson! As exams are right around the corner, a little refreshing through fun was well in order.

Each game we played was a traditional Japanese game. First the children smashed paper tiles into each other attempting to flip the stationary tile. A game I later found out was called menko(めんこ).

Then came dropping daruma(だるま落とし), where coloured blocks were knocked out from under the face block without toppling over.

Kendama was a little easier due to the time restrictions, where a student had to catch the ball in any chosen position just one time.

Finally tosenkyo*(投扇興), which is a very uncommon edo period game. A fan is held horizontally and launched through the air to knock over a small object named a chouchou. The students picked this game up very quickly.

After each game, the students, grouped in fours, answered our questions and passed to the next game. All in under five minutes. And did we mention their legs were bound together the whole time?

It was wonderful to have some English fun with our students before they start serious prep for their exams. Good luck to you all.

We are looking forward to next year’s DCG Games! Stay tuned!
