Rice Reaping

In fifth period, I joined the J2 students outside to watch them harvest the rice that they had carefully grown. It was a very interesting experience. This was my first time seeing rice before it had been harvested. Everyone seemed to be having a lot of fun cutting the stalks, bundling them together, and then mixing the dirt for the next round of seeds. The small hand scythe that the girls used looked difficult to use, but all of the students impressed me with their ability to cut the rice safely and expertly. I think this rice reaping experience is a kind of metaphor for the student’s school experience at Den-en-chofu. If the rice is taken care of, it will grow green and strong just as the students will be able to become intelligent and capable adults if they study hard and put effort into improving their own abilities.(ALT Samantha)
