English Camp Day 3

Today’s first big event was a round robin English Debate competition.  The girls split into home and away teams, and then had 6 rounds of 15 minute debates with the other groups in the morning.  The students argued the following topics: “Schools should have uniforms”, “Dance should be an Olympic sport”, and so on.  They listened to their opponents’ arguments and countered with their own ideas.  Many of them had some difficulty expressing their opinions in English, but they looked so happy and confident when their ideas outweighed the opposing team’s arguments.

After lunch they began to prepare for tomorrow’s English drama contest.  They are trying to create unique stories based on different folktales or stories taken from cultures around the world, not just Japan.  Tomorrow they are going to perform their original dramas in English. This will be their last activity at this camp, and each group is very eager to win first prize.

After their first drama practice, the girls took a break. We went to the hotel’s sports bar where they ordered drinks by themselves.  They ordered their favorite drinks. They had a nice time drinking their beverages, eating popcorn, and playing billiards and darts.

After the drink order activity, they enjoyed a treasure hunt.  They walked around the hotel grounds searching for six clues.  After finding the clues, they needed to work with their teammates to answer six riddle questions, and make a long English sentence using the clues that they discovered.  After dinner they continued creating and practicing their dramas. Tomorrow, we’re certain that they will make wonderful presentations!                                                                       ( Sakuma ・Shibao )
