On June 19th and 21st, DCG Academy held its first event of the 2023-2024 school year. J1 and J2 students were invited to participate in an activity during their lunch break to learn English vocabulary for shapes and animals. They played a modified version of a popular English word-guessing game, Pictionary.

6月１９日と２１日の昼休みに、今年度第1回目のDCG Academyを行いました。中等部１年生、２年生対象で簡単な図形を使って動物を描き、それをお互いに当てるというゲームです。

シンプルなゲームに参加者は大いに盛り上がりました。事前にフォームで復習をした図形の英語名を使って、ペンギンやライン、サル、などを描き、お互いに当て合う、というものです。

A total of 21 students attended both days of the activity. First, they reviewed the names of five simple shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, and diamond. They were divided into teams of 2-3 students and received a card with an animal on it. They kept the animal card secret from the other teams. Students were challenged to work together and take turns with their teammates to draw their assigned animal in one minute, using only the five simple shapes they reviewed.

両日合わせて21名の生徒が参加しました。最初に、circle, square, triangle, rectangle, and diamondといった英語名を発音しながら復習しました。次に２～３名でグループを作り、動物の絵をそれぞれ受け取り隣のグループには何を描くかを内緒にして、習った図形のみで動物を描きます。同じグループで一人が描いたら、次はもう一人の人が描く、という風に順番に描き、１分間で絵を仕上げます。

After one minute, each team showed their completed drawing to another team. They practiced animal names in English by guessing what animal the other students drew. Some animals were difficult to draw using only five shapes, but in the end, everyone was able to correctly guess each other’s drawings. They took very creative approaches to their drawings and displayed their skill in math, English, and even art!

１分経ったら、それぞれの絵をお互いに見せ合います。当てる時に英語を使うので、動物を英語で何というかも学べます。動物によっては、５つの図形だけで描くのは難しいのですが、参加したみなさんは、とても上手に特長をとらえて描き、かなりの確率で当てられていました。シンプルな図形を使って動物を描く創造性を発揮し、しかも英語でコミュニケーションをする、美術、数学、英語の力が融合的に発揮できました。
