Why Don’t You Study at UBC? (J3 homestay program)

Aug 9, Sunny

The ninth day of the program featured a full-day excursion to Vancouver. We visited the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the scenic neighborhood of Gastown. Students wrote;

‘I went to a Japanese university before.  UBC is larger than that. There are no entrance exams for Canadian universities. Today I noticed the difference between Canadian culture and Japanese culture.’

‘First, I visited UBC and talked with its students.  They were so kind. I was surprised at the college because it was very big.  I spoke a lot in English with the students. It was so nice!’

‘UBC is very beautiful and big.  It looks like a village. I think UBC students have bright eyes.  Now I have a new way of thinking about university. I want to know about universities in foreign countries.’

We had lunch on the campus before heading for the next destination, Gastown.

‘Today, I went to Vancouver.  I think Vancouver is a very beautiful town.  It’s because the town has many flowers. I like this town. I bought a lot of maple syrup.  I’m so happy.’

‘I was surprised that the university was very big.  I was happy because I was able to take pictures at TWICE’s MV shooting location.’ (TWICE is a Korean pop group.)

The most famous landmark of Gastown is this steam-powered clock.

It was a long bus ride, but the students had a lot of fun.

‘The traffic was a little heavy today, so it took us more time to go downtown. As for me, I didn’t feel it long, because I talked with Naomi. She was very kind and I had a very good time with her.’

For some girls, the biggest event of the day might have happened after the trip.

‘Today, I cooked Japanese food for my host family.  I cooked three dishes. I worried whether they would be pleased with them. Later, they ate them. Then they said, “They are very delicious. We are so happy.” I was so glad to hear that.’
